When to Renew Your Passport: The Six-Month Validity Rule

By Papyrus Digital · Updated · 8 min read

Renew your passport when it has nine to twelve months left. Thailand, Indonesia, India, the UAE and many other countries require at least six months of validity after the day you arrive. The Schengen area needs three months beyond the day you leave and a passport issued within ten years. Starting early covers both rules plus processing time.

Passport dates come round once a decade, too rarely for any habit to form around them. This guide gives you the rules, the current processing times and a simple way to work out your own "start renewing" date.

What is the six-month passport rule?

Many countries refuse entry if your passport expires soon after you arrive. The US State Department says that "many countries require passports to have at least 6 months validity remaining to enter", and its general advice is to make sure your passport is valid for six months after you return home.

The rule is usually enforced before you reach the border. Airlines check documents against IATA's Timatic database, which supplies passport, visa and health requirements to airlines and travel agents, and the State Department notes that some airlines refuse boarding when the validity rule is not met.

Two details matter:

  1. Arrival or departure. Most six-month countries count from the day you arrive. The Schengen area counts from the day you leave.
  2. The printed expiry is not your travel deadline. A passport that expires in June 2027 stops working for six-month countries in December 2026.

Which countries require six months?

The table below comes from GOV.UK's foreign travel advice for British passport holders, checked in October 2026. Rules for other nationalities are often the same but not always, so check your own government's advice for your destination (for US citizens, the country pages on travel.state.gov).

Destination Passport must be valid for Blank pages required
Thailand 6 months after arrival 1
Indonesia 6 months after arrival 2
Vietnam 6 months after arrival, and undamaged 2
India 6 months after arrival 2
United Arab Emirates 6 months after arrival (3 months with a UAE residence permit) None listed
Singapore 6 months after arrival None listed
Philippines 6 months after arrival None listed
Malaysia 6 months after arrival, undamaged, no missing pages None listed
Turkey 150 days after arrival 1
Schengen area, e.g. France 3 months after the day you leave, issued within the last 10 years None listed
United States The length of your stay None listed
Canada The length of your stay None listed
Mexico The length of your stay (the Mexican Embassy recommends 180 days) None listed

Even when your destination only asks for validity covering your stay, GOV.UK points out that countries you pass through on the way may apply the six-month rule.

How does the Schengen 10-year rule work?

To enter the Schengen area as a non-EU visitor, your passport must meet two conditions on the day you arrive, according to the EU's Your Europe guidance:

  1. It was issued within the last 10 years.
  2. It is valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave.

For example, if you fly into Spain on 1 July 2027 and leave on 15 July 2027, your passport must have been issued after 1 July 2017 and must not expire before 15 October 2027.

If you hold a British passport renewed before 1 October 2018, check the issue date as well as the expiry date: GOV.UK warns that some of these passports may not meet the 10-year rule. GOV.UK also notes that the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is replacing passport stamps with electronic records, and visa-free visits are still limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.

How long does passport renewal take right now?

As of October 2026, these are the official figures. They move with demand, so check the live pages before you apply.

Service Typical time Notes
US routine 4 to 6 weeks Mailing not included: up to 2 weeks for your application to arrive and 2 more for the passport to reach you
US expedited 2 to 3 weeks Costs an extra $60; mailing time still applies
US urgent Appointment at a passport agency Only if you have international travel within 14 calendar days
UK standard (online) Usually within 3 weeks Paper applications by post take longer
UK 1 week Fast Track Delivered by courier 1 week after your appointment Earliest appointment is the next day
UK 1 day Premium Ready to collect 4 hours after your appointment Earliest appointment is 2 days after you apply

US figures are from the State Department's processing times page (last updated 5 October 2026). UK figures are from HM Passport Office and GOV.UK's page on getting a passport urgently.

One more UK detail from GOV.UK: do not book travel until you have a valid passport, because your new passport will not have the same number as your old one.

How many blank pages do you need?

The State Department says a passport "must also have 2 or more blank pages, or some countries may deny entry". In the table above, Indonesia, Vietnam and India ask for two, and Thailand and Turkey ask for one.

A full passport needs replacing even if it has years of validity left. The State Department no longer adds visa pages to a current US passport book. Instead you renew, and you can select the "large book" option to get extra visa pages.

When should you start renewing?

Work backwards from the expiry date:

  1. Read two dates on the photo page: the date of issue and the date of expiry.
  2. Subtract six months. That is your practical travel deadline for six-month countries.
  3. Subtract processing and mailing time. US routine service can take up to 6 weeks plus up to 4 weeks of mailing, so about 10 weeks. UK standard service is usually within 3 weeks.
  4. Add a buffer for bookings. Trips are often booked months ahead, and the new passport comes with a new number.

That arithmetic lands at roughly nine months before expiry, or twelve if you travel often or already have a trip planned. For Schengen trips, also confirm the issue date is less than ten years old on the day you arrive.

Children's passports need their own reminder. A US passport for a child under 16 is valid for five years and cannot be renewed, so you apply again. A UK child passport is also valid for five years. Adult passports in both countries last 10 years. A family of four can easily have a passport deadline every year or two.

Passports are one part of a household's date load. The family admin checklist covers the other documents worth tracking, and choosing reminder lead times explains how far ahead to be reminded for each. For the bigger picture, see how to stop forgetting important dates.

How Deadlinr helps

Deadlinr keeps each passport as one item in its Documents category, with the date you give it. By default it reminds you 7 days, 3 days and 1 day before, and on the day, at 9:00 AM; a 14-day reminder can be switched on, and reminder times are editable per category. For a passport, the most useful date to enter is the day you want to start renewing, about nine months before expiry, so the reminders arrive while there is still time to act. The document expiry tracker page shows how it works for other documents too.

Does the six-month rule count from the day I arrive or the day I leave?

It depends on the country. Thailand, Indonesia, India and most other six-month countries count from the day you arrive, while the Schengen area counts three months from the day you plan to leave.

Will the airline check my passport expiry date?

Often, yes. Airlines check travel documents against IATA's Timatic database, and the US State Department notes that some airlines refuse boarding if a destination's validity rule is not met.

How long is a child's passport valid?

In both the US and the UK, a passport issued to a child under 16 is valid for five years. A US child passport cannot be renewed, so you apply for a new one each time.

Can I add pages to a full US passport?

No. The State Department no longer adds visa pages to a current passport book. You renew instead, and you can choose a large book with extra visa pages.

Can I book flights before my new passport arrives?

GOV.UK advises against it: do not book travel until you have a valid passport, because your new passport will have a different number from your old one.
